(Halifax, Nova Scotia) – The Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB) is updating a Strategic Environmental Assessment for the Middle Scotian Shelf and Slope, to ensure that information on the area remains up-to-date.

A Strategic Environmental Assessment is a broad-scale study that looks at the larger environmental setting and marine environment to identify potential environmental effects that may be associated with oil and gas activity, and the associated mitigation measures that may need to be considered.

Conducting a Strategic Environmental Assessment does not mean that activity will take place in the area. Should activity be proposed anywhere in the Canada-Nova Scotia offshore, a project-specific Environmental Assessment, among other things, must be undertaken, and must demonstrate to the CNSOPB that the proposed work can be done without significant adverse environmental impacts.

The CNSOPB invites Indigenous groups and the public to submit written comments on the draft Strategic Environmental Assessment, which is available at: https://www.cnsopb.ns.ca/environmental-assessments/environmental-documents-available-public-comment.
Please submit your comments to comments@cnsopb.ns.ca by April 18, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. Atlantic Time.

All comments received will be considered public and will be posted on the CNSOPB Strategic Environmental Assessment Registry. The final Strategic Environmental Assessment will be available on the CNSOPB Strategic Environmental Assessment Registry, once this process is complete.
