RESOURCE ESTIMATES

Estimates of hydrocarbon resources and reserves in the Scotian Basin were first undertaken in the mid-1970s following several significant oil and gas discoveries, and release of industry geoscience data. Subsequently, further estimates were completed by other federal government departments and agencies as well as non-governmental groups after more discoveries were made and data were released. These assessments were variable in their geographic and geologic coverage, types of plays analyzed, available geoscience datasets, etc. It is acknowledged that some earlier historical assessments of various regions and subbasins require updating, and others or portions thereof requiring first assessments. Nevertheless, the integrity of the earlier assessments is considered sound, and a compilation and integration of these and modern assessments provide a reasonable outlook on the hydrocarbon reserves and resources of the Scotian Basin.
