Board issues prohibition order over coal block
The Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board has issued an order prohibiting the issuance of petroleum licences over the offshore area known as the Donkin coal block. The order will prevent competing resource development issues from arising in the event the planned coal mining project proceeds.
There are no offshore petroleum licences in the area which totals 186.5 square kilometres, or 18,657 hectares. A map outlining the area affected is found below (Figure 1).
Under the Accord Acts, an order such as this is a Fundamental Decision. The federal and provincial governments are given up to thirty days to review Fundamental Decisions prior to implementation. The governments have approved the Board’s decision to issue the order.
